Lebanon seeks 350MW/1GWh solar and energy storage in new tender

The Lebanese government is seeking bids for 350MW of solar PV and 1GWh of battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity.

The Lebanon Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) launched an Expression of Interest (EOI) seeking up five grid-connected solar PV projects totalling 350MW combined capacity, tied to 1GWh of BESS, which it said will “support Lebanon’s future electricity sector development.”

It is also seeking dual-fired thermal power plants between 20MW and 100MW in size.

The EOI calls for “developers, investors, Independent Power Producers (IPPs), EPC contractors, equipment suppliers, and consortia” to submit their interest. The deadline for submissions in 31 August 2026.

As of the end of 2025, Lebanon has 1,505MW of installed solar PV capacity, according to data from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). IRENA said that all renewables account for just over 39% of Lebanon’s electricity supply.

Lebanon has experienced blackouts and unreliable energy supply for years. Following a series of collapses, Human Rights Watch reported that in 2023 many households had only a few hours of electricity supply from the grid per day. The country relies heavily on imported fossil fuels; in 2023, oil and oil products accounted for over 80% of the country’s energy demand, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). The ongoing conflict in Iran and the broader Middle East is likely to endanger that dependency.
